James Taylor from Te Puna Wai Lodge in Nelson says “My connection with Gay Stay NZ goes back to before it existed. Richard & I stayed with Bruce Morrison many years ago and he delivered us to the airport for our trip home. En route I told him I was already working with several gay hosts throughout the country so a gay stay site would be beneficial, but I didn’t have the time to do it. Bruce took the idea and ran with it to great success. I consider myself to be Gay Stay’s father – having planted the seed”
So in May 2004, Bruce of Christchurch Gay Stay formed Gay Stay NZ with a group of 5 people, most based in Christchurch. The philosophy was simple ‘to set up a website that GLBT accommodation providers could list their guest house, B and B, Farmstay or whatever on and to promote each other’s businesses in a collegial way that would foster good relationships between all parties.'
The only criterion was that the accommodation had to be owned / operated by a GLBT and greeted by such on the guests arrival. They didn't want other gay businesses listed such as retail, hospitality etc as there could be thousands on the site but in the future that may change.
Gay Stay NZ is an informal cooperative. No one gets paid except the website designer who is not a host. There are about 100 listings on the website, most are B&B but some self contained. Although we stipulate that all our listings are owned and / or operated by Gay, Lesbian, Bi Sexual or Transgender people, guests can be from any community if the host wishes. There are some members who are strictly women only or men only and these are listed on separate tabs on the website.
Bruce has worked tirelessly in the role of coordinator and has grown the website from a few members to what we have today and our community is very grateful to Bruce for his hard work and also to Gerard who did the original website. The coordinator role has now been taken over by Gary Mitchell of Ribbonwood Country House in Cheviot.
