Picton is a marine town surrounded by wineries, set against the backdrop of spectacular Marlborough Sounds. With its crystal clear waterways, pristine native bush and tablecloth spread of vineyards and wineries, Picton is the jewel in the Marlborough crown. Picton is all about boats, marine creatures and waterways. Not only is it a bustling port for the Cook Strait ferries, moving thousands of passengers and goods between the North and South Islands every day, it is also a major yachting centre. Waikawa Marina is one of the largest in New Zealand and eager yachties arrive each summer to explore and enjoy the intricate networks of the Marlborough Sounds-and with 1500km of sheltered coastline in close proximity, they’re never short of a new adventure.
Picton is the gateway to the famous Queen Charlotte Walkway, a one to four day trekking experience that takes you through coastal forest, along skyline ridges and around cute coves and peaceful inlets. It’s a relatively easy 71km excursion and various companies offer assorted mixed –activity options like mountain biking, kayaking and sailing combinations. And let’s not forget the wineries. Marlborough’s mellow climate and excellent soils have combined to make one of the world’s premier wine-producing regions and with over 60 wineries to explore-many with excellent restaurants or tasting rooms- you’ll be busy.
You’ll be staggered by the vast array of natural attractions, adventures and fantastic activities on offer in this, one of the sunniest places in New Zealand.
